Founded by Edwin F. Atkins of Boston, the Atkins Institution was formally inaugurated in 1901 and given by him to Harvard University in 1919. It was located on 200 acres in Soledad, Cienfuegos, Cuba, and established as a living collection of woody plants from the tropics and subtropics. In 1932 Atkins was transferred to Arnold Arboretum as the Atkins Institution of the Arnold Arboretum. John George Jack was born in Chateauguay, Quebec, Canada on April 15, 1861. In 1882 Jack became a member of the American Association for the advancement of Science in where he made contacts that eventually let to employment at the Arnold Arboretum. From 1882 to 1885 Jack attended lectures given by Harvard professors including Dr. Hermann August Hagen, Professor Alpheus Hyatt, and George Goodale.
